Portland, Maine's very own WhiteBike program just started this past week. Now, visitors and locals alike can borrow a bike from the Monument Square bike rack and tour the city to get some errands done.

In 1996, Portland became one of the first cities in America to have a public use bike program. Does anyone remember those yellow bikes around town?

No, its because thieves and vandals made off with the unlocked public bike in a matter of months.

John Rooks, president of Dwell Creative , a local public relations design firm thinks that the time for a resurgence in this program is now and has begun Portland's new WhiteBike.org program.

The bikes are locked to the bike racks, currently at Monument Square (with plans to increase locations). Combinations to the locks can be looked up online at WhiteBike.org . The first few bikes were borrowed within hours of being placed outside. Go ahead and try one out for yourself; save some gas, get some fresh air and tour this wonderful little city of Portland, Maine.
