February 22, 2008 Local Chef and Microbrew Make Top 100 in Saveur Magazine Chef Sam Hayward and Gritty McDuff’s as well as other Maine favorites make the list of favorites
PORTLAND, Maine – Last month, Saveur Magazine released its 100 Favorite Foods, Restaurants, Drinks, People, Places, and Things, and making the list at number fifty-five was Maine, “A State of Bliss.” Among the highlights were local chef, Sam Hayward of Fore Street and microbrew, Gritty McDuff’s Best Brown Ale. “It’s nice to see Portland receive recognition for its rich culinary community,” remarked Mayor Ed Suslovic. “Hayward and Gritty McDuff’s are great examples of the high-quality food and drink available in the City, and Saveur’s recognition is a credit to their talent and skills.” “Perhaps one of Maine and Portland’s best kept secrets is the availability of fresh, locally-grown produce and it was good to see that the prevalence of farmers’ markets in the area did not go unnoticed by Saveur,” concluded Suslovic. Other Maine favorites featured in the magazine include Black Crow Bakery, Down East Schooner Mustard, and Stonington Sea Products. Published by the Bonnier Corporation, Saveur, a food and wine magazine, produces a top 100 magazine annually. The 100 are not ranked in order of preference but ordered randomly.
