Portland, Maine was home to one of the worst urban fires in early America history on July 4, 1866. “Resurgam!” has ever since been the city’s motto. The 1866 fire burned over 10,000 homes and caused an estimated $12 million in damage. The City of Portland responded by building the wonderful Victorian promenade we see today, as well as bolstered the communities just to the east and west of the Prom, both vibrant communities to this day. Make sure to join Earl Shettleworth Jr., Director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission when he present the slide lecture, "The Day Portland Burned: July 4, 1866." This lecture traces the dramatic destruction and rebirth of a great American city. The lecture is free and sponsored by Sprits Alive. One Longfellow Square on March 29th at 10 a.m.
