Historic Landmarks in and around Portland, Maine

 

Portland, Maine and the surrounding Casco Bay region is full to the brim with historic landmarks and locations. 

Here is a short list of the U.S. Historic Landmark in and around Portland, Maine:

Neal S. Dow House :  The Neal S. Dow House is located at 714 Congress St. in Portland. Built in 1829, the House was built for noted Prohibitionist politician, Neal S. Dow. Neal Dow is known as the "Father of Prohibition", while as Mayor of Portland, he passed the Maine law of 1851, outlawing the production of liquor. Dow's tactics led to the Portland Rum Riot of 1855. 

 The Winslow Homer House: The Winslow Homer House is the original studio of famous American articist, Winslow Homer. Located on Prout's Neck in Scarborough, Maine, the Portland Museum of Art recently acquired the home and is restoring it for visitor, set to re-open to the public in 2010. 

 Victoria Manison : also known as the Morse Libby Mansion, Victoria Mansionis an example of lavish, 19th century living in a statel, urban mansion. The brownstone mansion was completed in 1860 for Ruggles Sylvester Morse, a 19th century hotelier. The building is knwon as one of the finestand least-altered examples of a large Italianate Villa-styled brick and brownstone town house in the United States.

McClellan - Sweat Manison: The McClellan - Sweat Mansion is located at 111 High Streetin Portland, Maine. The home was orginally constrcuted in 1800. 

Portland Observatory: The Portland Observatory is the last surviving maritime signal tower in the United States. Orginally constrcuted in 1807, the tower allowed two way communication with ship entering and leaving Portland sevral hours before their arrival. Guided tours with access to a small museum, film screening and gift shop are available Memorial Day through columbus Day.

Thomas B. Reed House: The Thomas Brackett Reed house is located at 30-32 Deering Street in Portland, Maine. The home was built in 1888.

The Wadsworth-Longfellow House: The Wadsworth-Longfellow House is the crown jewel of historic landmarks in Portland, Maine. Lcoated at 489 Congress Street, the House was originally home to famous American author and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, but is also the oldest still standing strucutre in Portland, Maine, as well the oldest brick strucutre in the city. Originally construcuted for General Peleg Wadsworth in 1785-1786, a long line of Wadsworth's family lived in the home, throughout the geneations. The home is now open as a musuem, and truly amazing, experience and literary base tours are given on a daily basis.
