Portland, Maine is a bustling, New England city with a robust downtown and commercial center, as well as a quaint, yet lively Old Port Shopping District. Its home to museums, an international jetport, galleries, boutiques and major companies. With all these amenities of a major city, it is nice to know that you can access the natural beauty of Maine, within minutes. Hiking in and around Portland and Casco Bay offers visitors or all skill levels, from beginner to intermediate and expert, a great opportunity to hike Maine's southern coastline. Urban hiking is also plentiful and available in and around Portland. The Back Cove (along Baxter Boulevard) path, a 3 mile loop around the city is a good place to start. Baxter Woods Park has some shorter walks, as well. Some more adventurous hikes in and just out side of Portland include; Bradbury Mountain in Freeport, Wolfe's Neck State Park in Freeport, and Fort Wiliams in Cape Elizabeth. Mountain biking trips are regularly launched out of Portland to climb the larger and faster trails available. You can also reach Acadia National Park and Rangeley Mountain in a matter of a few hours. Be sure to check out our Portland Activity Directory to find a location or provider.
