Renovator's Paradise
Friday, 02 May 2008
Each year it seems the Do-It-Yourself movement for home repairs and improvements gets larger and more prominent. Home Depot's and Lowe's seem to pop up on street corners like Starbuck's these days. If these mega-stores are not your cup of tea, try driving up the coast of Southern Maine and stopping in on two locations: The Old House Parts Company and Portland Architectual Salvage . Renovators and Do-It-Yourselfer's will be so glad they made the trip.

Resurgam! Portland's Historic Fire
Thursday, 27 March 2008

Portland, Maine was home to one of the worst urban fires in early America history on July 4, 1866. “Resurgam!” has ever since been the city’s motto.

The 1866 fire burned over 10,000 homes and caused an estimated $12 million in damage. The City of Portland responded by building the wonderful Victorian promenade we see today, as well as bolstered the communities just to the east and west of the Prom, both vibrant communities to this day.

Make sure to join Earl Shettleworth Jr., Director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission  when he present the slide lecture, "The Day Portland Burned: July 4, 1866." This lecture traces the dramatic destruction and rebirth of a great American city. The lecture is free and sponsored by Sprits Alive.  One Longfellow Square on March 29th at 10 a.m.
